I am a student at UC Irvine in the Medical Scientist Training Program, pursuing an MD in conjunction with a PhD in Computer Science. I have a strong interest in developing health technologies, specifically in the areas of preventive medicine. My graduate work is in the Ramesh Jain -Social Life Networks lab.
I graduated with a triple major from the University of California, Berkeley in Molecular and Cell Biochemistry, Nutritional Physiology and Metabolism and Integrative Biology. Academic awards include: Academic Highest Honors (summa cum laude), Golden Key Honors, Alumni Leadership Award for both 2010 and 2011, and Honors Distinction in Integrative Biology with thesis. My research background includes working at 3 labs at UC Berkeley, studying how lactate is metabolized in the body during exercise in the Brooks lab, researching the mechanisms of nutrition and aging in the Hellerstein lab, and studying cellular signaling in adipocytes in the Sul Lab. Prior to my scientific research at UC Berkeley, I worked in Bexel Pharmaceuticals (now owned by Orchid Pharma) studying metabolic disease in Silicon Valley. After my undergraduate education, I worked at Renovel Discoveries, developing therapeutics for metabolic disease.
My athletic career in competitive cycling started in 2000, becoming a professional in 2008. In 2005, I developed the NRL Team, the first competitive U23/Junior Mountain Bike Development Program in Northern California. Athletes on the NRL Team now compete in all aspects of bike racing, and have further diversified into other activities such as climbing, ski mountaineering and more. I also competed for the Cal Cycling Team in both road and mountain collegiate disciplines, earning the Most Valuable Cyclist 4 years in a row (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) with a silver medal in the overall elite MTB omnium for the WCCC Conference in 2008 and 2010, and 4th at National Champs overall in 2010, 8th in 2011. I am also the founder and former president of the Cal Climbing Team and the UCI Climbing Team. Highly involved in the cycling community, I also developed the Rule Book for the NorCal High School Mountain Bike Racing League, which now is transformed into the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. My high school racing career included founding 3 high school teams, including the Oakland Composite Team, the Fremont Composite Team and the American High School Cycling Team.
Exploring into the outdoors is one of my fundamental pleasures via climbing, backpacking, skiing, kayaking and more. I am honored to be given the distinction of “Outdoor Idol,” an industry-wide award for the top 10 inspirational outdoor athletes. I am also an Outdoor Nation Ambassador, helping to get youth involved in a healthy and active lifestyle. I completed the National Outdoor Leadership School certification in Trip Leading and I am a Leave No Trace instructor. Prior to my bike racing career, I was a competitive martial artist and instructor, earning a 2nd dan Black Belt in 2004 from Ernie Reyes West Coast World Martial Arts.
I am also an athletic coach in cycling for all levels of athletes, specializing in wellness/lifestyle change, juniors/espoirs and XC/Enduro mountain bike racing. My approach to coaching combines scientific analytics with the art of understanding mental strength. Several of my athletes have had success at the state and national levels. I am a USA Cycling (from the USA Olympic Committee) Coach and USA Cycling Bill Woodul Race Mechanic. By optimizing logistics, machine, body, and mind, I love to bring about the best in my clients.
